Raymond J. Lane is General Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, America's premier venture capital firm, focusing on guiding established businesses to successfully take advantage of new strategic Internet opportunities as well as helping entrepreneurs with organizational development, team building, and managing sales teams.

Most recently, Ray was President and Chief Operating Officer of Oracle Corporation, the second-largest software company in the world and the leading enterprise software and services company. Prior to being named President and COO, Ray was Executive Vice President of Oracle Corp. and President of Worldwide Operations. Ray joined Oracle in 1992 as President of Oracle USA. During his eight-year tenure, Oracle exhibited phenomenal sales growth, from approximately $1 billion in 1992 to its current annual revenue of $10.1 billion. He also serves on Oracle's board of directors.

He led Oracle's business expansion beyond its core database technology into enterprise applications and professional services. Today, Oracle offers the broadest set of applications in the market including Customer Relationship Management, Supply Chain Management, Manufacturing, Procurement, Financials and Human Resources. Ray also helped focus Oracle on specific industries, bringing industry and functional expertise to Oracle making the company's relationship with large industry leaders closer and more strategic.

Before joining Oracle, Ray was a senior partner with Booz-Allen & Hamilton, where he pioneered and led the Information Systems Group, a worldwide consulting practice targeted at helping senior management achieve better results from information technology. He also served on Booz-Allen's board of directors and executive management committee. Prior to Booz-Allen & Hamiliton, Ray served as division vice president with Electronic Data Systems Corp (EDS). In addition, he spent ten years with IBM in various product-management, sales and marketing positions.

Ray received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from West Virginia University (WVU). He was elected to the Academy of Distinguished Graduates of WVU and serves on the University's Foundation Board. Recently, WVU honored Ray by naming the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. Ray also serves as a life trustee on the board at Carnegie Mellon University. Ray has been an active campaigner and planner for Carnegie Mellon's establishment of a Silicon Valley campus, and the co-creator of a High Dependability Computing Consortium with Carnegie Mellon and NASA. As a KPCB partner, Ray has invested in Valdero Corporation. Other board relationships include FreeMarkets, Asera, Elance, Marimba, Inc., SeeBeyond, Quest and Sheer Networks. He serves as Chairman of the Board for Elance and SeeBeyond. He also serves on the international board of Special Olympics. Ray holds an honorary PhD from Golden Gate University and he is active in Bay Area civic activities.
