Air France Industries KLM Engineering and Maintenance (AFI KLM E&M) needed a system for delivering technical content across the maintenance, planning and engineering system; their methods of managing and distributing technical content were inefficient and costly. AFI KLM E&M now uses the Enigma 3C® InService MRO and Revision Manager solutions to integrate the technical documentation with existing back office such as ERP and maintenance planning, inventory and logistics, and scheduling systems, which improves maintenance in its aircraft maintenance, engine services and components shop divisions.
AFI KLM E&M, which joined forces following the Air France KLM merger, is a world-leading multi-product MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) provider with a workforce of over 14,000, offering comprehensive technical support for airlines, ranging from engineering and line maintenance to engine overhaul, as well as the management, repair and supply of aircraft components, structured around a powerful logistics network. Together they support more than 1,230 aircraft operated by 150 major international airlines.
AFI KLM E&M needed to move away from a costly and time-consuming MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) technical publication management process. Large volumes of data must be pulled from technical manuals, illustrated parts catalogs and engineering orders that come from AFI KLM E&M and the various aircraft OEMs (such as Boeing and Airbus). The data must be updated, and then delivered across the maintenance environment, from technical publications to planning to inventory to line and base maintenance.
The KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Engineering & Maintenance division began using the Enigma 3C® Platform in 2004 to deliver aircraft maintenance data to all of its overhaul and line-maintenance mechanics. Later, KLM E&M also implemented Enigma’s InService Revision Manager to help compare and reconcile documentation changes from Boeing and Airbus, with changes made by KLM E&M, which ensured fast, accurate maintenance and support. The company documented a 10% reduction in aircraft maintenance IT costs as a result of these solutions.
In 2011, AFI KLM E&M signed a license agreement with Enigma to upgrade and expand their Enigma implementation to incorporate the latest versions of Enigma InService MRO and Revision Manager solutions for publishing and managing all technical content. AFI KLM E&M recognized the advantages of moving to the commercial off-the-shelf solution (COTS), and will be experiencing the benefits of simplified IT configuration and integration capabilities and a streamlined workflow and user interface.
For AFI KLM E&M engineers, planners and technicians, the Enigma solution is the single source for all information related to airframe and engine maintenance, including OEM maintenance manuals and parts catalogs, maintenance supplements, service bulletins and schematics. Enigma InService MRO provides a production environment that supports S1000D and ATA iSpec 2000/2200/2300 (and earlier) specifications as well as PDF, including effectivity filtering, for aircraft, engine and component manuals. It automates the creation and distribution of a product encyclopedia that simplifies the maintenance and support of complex equipment, as well as the deployment of illustrated parts catalogs that can be integrated with existing back office systems, such as ERP and maintenance planning, inventory and logistics, and scheduling systems. Enigma InService Revision Manager accelerates the review and approval process for maintenance updates and revisions. As new information comes in from OEMs and component manufacturers, InService Revision Manager identifies any changes between the revised documentation and the existing content currently being used by maintenance technicians.
“We are committed to optimizing safety, reliability and uptime for our fleet, and for the past seven years Enigma technology has been a key component of our maintenance and engineering operations,” said Peter de Swert, Executive Vice President, AFI KLM E&M. “By significantly accelerating the implementation of tens of thousands of maintenance updates and revisions, Enigma’s InService MRO will provide another competitive advantage for our aircraft, components and engine services operations,” he added.
