Enigma MRO Technology Increases Maintenance Consistency and Efficiency

Summary

Rolls-Royce Defence, which manufactures and services equipment for military aircraft, implemented an Enigma solution for interactive electronic technical manuals (IETM) in 1999 to provide its military engine technicians at UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) locations with real-time access to all technical content (maintenance manuals and illustrated parts catalogs). The application improves maintenance consistency and efficiency by delivering complete and accurate repair and overhaul information to the maintenance technicians.

Challenge

Rolls-Royce needed a way to effectively deliver critical technical documentation for the RB199 engine (which powers the Tornado Aircraft) to approximately 500 engineers and technicians across multiple global repair facilities.

Solution: A Maintenance Solution to Deliver Updated Service and Maintenance Information

Enigma 3C technology enables Rolls-Royce engine technicians to access all relevant content for each service or repair procedure, filtered by engine mark. Enigma pulls content from multiple sources, including S1000D-based engine maintenance manuals, the full overhaul, modifications, standard practices manuals, and illustrated parts catalogs. It delivers the relevant information required for a specific engine, saving hours of time that would be spent searching and cross-referencing existing documentation. Advanced functionality gives technicians visual access to all of the procedures for each of the main engine modules, without having to navigate through a table of contents or even conduct a search. Technicians access all critical service information from this single integrated browser-based application, via the Web or offline (DVD), regardless of content management software or data format.

For situations that require printed materials, Enigma provides the unique ability to select and print a set of maintenance procedures—with a single click—for a specific engine configuration, complete with engine/module serial numbers and sequentially numbered pages. This Maintenance Procedure Print functionality is a key part of the solution for Rolls-Royce, providing mechanics with the ability to receive the complete set of documents required to support an individual assembly or installation, or to do a full build from the module of choice all the way up to the complete engine. In addition, Enigma 3C allows mechanics and technicians to move seamlessly, with a single click of a button, between a customized view of various maintenance documents and the corresponding parts list and schematics.

Benefits

  • Improves maintenance efficiency in the hangar
  • Reduces time and cost of distributing updated parts information
  • Decreases parts mis-orders
  • Provides user-friendly, “one-stop-shop” for service and safety information
  • Provides an intuitive Maintenance Procedure Print for individual modules of the engine, or for a complete engine build
