Summary
The Boston Planning Yard's, a detachment of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, mission is to provide their customers with quality, timely and cost efficient maintenance, modernization, logistics and technical support through comprehensive Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs).
Challenges: Reduce Costs, Boost Productivity, Keep Information Secure
To achieve its mission, the Boston Planning Yard needed to:
- Decrease the time spent by maintenance personnel locating and referencing thousands of pages of IETM information
- Leverage the US Navy's investment in SGML-formatted IETMs to achieve productivity, cost reduction and equipment uptime goals
- Facilitate distribution of IETMs to US Navy sea craft home bases throughout the world
- Reduce costs associated with printing, shipping and continuously updating large volumes of IETMs
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Solution: Visual and Procedural Navigation Simplifies Use of Maintenance Information
The Boston Planning Yard deployed Enigma's Integrated IETM Solution based on the Enigma 3C ® Platform to help increase maintenance productivity, significantly reduce the costs of printing, updating and distributing IETMs and boost sea craft uptime.
The visual and procedural navigation and configuration-sensitive search functionality of Enigma 3C allows mechanics to find maintenance information faster and more accurately.
IETMs are updated and distributed via cd-rom, as needed, to the home base of each of the 90 LCACs.
To maintain a high level of security, interaction with IETMs is access controlled and encrypted. Access is limited to the LCAC community within the US Navy.
Using the Integrated IETM Solution, more than 115 manuals have been deployed to the LCAC fleet over its Intranet and on cd-rom.
Benefits: Efficient Information Searches Leads to Increased Productivity
Research and information searches by US Navy technicians are accomplished significantly faster than with existing paper manuals or other types of electronic manuals.
By using Enigma's solution, the US Navy's LCAC fleet has experienced increased maintenance productivity and increased sea craft uptime.
The US Navy has significantly reduced costs and delays associated with printing, shipping and updating LCAC technical information.
