The Uptime Blog Update: Airlines Grounded in Reality

One of our recent blog posts, Grounded in Reality, references the recent havoc in the airline industry that resulted in mass flight cancellations.  We suggest that future crises could be alleviated if OEMs would publish their maintenance data in a more usable format, so that maintenance and engineering departments could plan and execute required service more efficiently and consistently.  To read our opinion, and submit a comment, click here.

The Myth of Sisyphus and MRO Software Tools

In Greek mythology, a king named Sisyphus must forever roll a boulder up a steep hill. In some sense, the volume of data required to keep commercial and military fleets flying seems like that boulder, and the hill is the perpetual demand for base and line maintenance during the lifetime of multiple aircraft.

This month's issue of Aviation Maintenance magazine discusses a variety of software tools for MRO, including Enigma's InService Job Card Generator, Revision Manager and the Enigma 3C platform.

Based on customer experience, suppliers of MRO software interviewed here offer definitions of efficiency ranging from "getting the right parts and technical support to the right place at the right time" to "reducing business complexity" and "reducing software implementation and usage complexity." John Snow, vice president of marketing and business development for Enigma, commented, "Among our customers, efficiency equates to reducing aircraft downtime. A work force will execute faster using software that is intuitive and automates data retrieval tasks previously performed manually."

Robin Bates, Director of Enigma Europe, will be speaking at the Airline & Aerospace MRO & Operations IT Conference in Frankfurt, Germany, on May 21.  His presentation, titled “Digital Documentation: Opportunities for Improvement,” will show the audience how to do the following:

  • Efficiently manage document revisions, releasing new documents in a fraction of the current time
  • Automatically generate electronic job cards, releasing planning engineers to focus on value-add activities, decreasing errors caused by incorrect documentation, and improving first-time fix rates
  • Incorporate digital signatures into existing job cards to provide added productivity and automate configuration management.
