Putting PDF to Work: Making PDF Data Interactive

PDF documents comprise the majority of service and parts information, yet it is difficult for IT systems to extract data from a PDF. As a result, most maintenance solutions require users to cut-and-paste the necessary data from PDF into whatever business application they are using. This is a slow and often error-prone process, which eliminates the benefits derived from automation.

Fortunately, Enigma 3C® PDF Tools make PDF useful for maintenance automation by “inserting” the missing embedded data elements in a way that allows PDF to act more like SGML and XML.

Reducing Content Duplication in Aviation Maintenance

Service and parts documents can be hundreds of megabytes in size, so it is important to avoid duplicating common data across publications. Content duplication increases time, cost and likelihood of errors in three areas:

* Updating (and verifying) multiple publications when common documents are revised
* Synchronizing multiple databases and business systems (planning, inventory and logistics) when common documents are changed
* Excessive storage space and slower processing times resulting from content duplication.

Enigma InService MRO (http://www.enigma.com/solutions/inservice_mro/) solves these problems by sharing common documents between multiple publications.

Applying Best Practices in Aviation Maintenance

How can airlines and MRO shops more easily manage OEM revisions, customer originated changes (COCs) and supplements?

Enigma InService MRO includes functionality to publish, index and integrate COCs, revisions and supplements into the service and parts content, so that maintenance engineers and technicians can leverage the most current service and parts information.

Producing Skilled Workers – Filling Demand for Expertise in Manufacturing and Services

An article by Ben Casselman in the Wall Street Journal (http://tinyurl.com/792sume) discusses a recent survey by consulting firm Deloitte that found “83% of manufacturers reported a moderate or severe shortage of skilled production workers to hire.” And that “74% of manufacturers said a shortage of skilled production workers had a ‘significant negative impact’ on either their productivity or expansion plans.”

This article raises some important questions about how companies can train their workforce, not only through on-the-job experience, but through better on-the-job knowledge tools.

The Costs of Equipment Downtime

A recent Technology Services Industry Association (TSIA) blog (http://sallyfoster.tsia.com/) focuses on how much time a consumer loses when their equipment is broken; time spent talking on the phone with customer support, or waiting for a service technician to show up.

Although the issue of lost time for consumers is interesting, it is even more important to address the issue of equipment downtime costs for industries such as high tech medical, oil/gas, semiconductor, construction machinery and mass transit. When their equipment goes offline the stakes are even higher; they lose revenue opportunities.
