Director of Engineering, Data
New York, NY
The mission of the Data Engineering team is to engineer the environment for which Enigma's data ingestion workload can scale with our high-reaching goal of building the world’s largest public data repository. Public data offers a wealth of information on companies, regions, and individuals. Enigma Data provides curated public data to commercial organizations for smarter decision-making, informing key business processes, and automating workflows. By linking public datasets with internal data assets, organizations can craft a rich knowledge base and develop new insights. While public datasets often exist in inaccessible formats or overwhelming volumes, Enigma Data controls all complexities from retrieval to standardization to delivery. Among Fortune 500 companies and top hedge funds, Enigma is a trusted source for delivering analysis-ready public data.
Reporting directly to our Executive team, you will cultivate an engaging environment and a culture of excellence, providing technical and people leadership. Data Engineering is responsible for data packages and data products, curating true to source data that covers subjects ranging from oil production to healthcare. Our team ensures that Enigma’s public data corpus is not just delivered, but easily integrated with private data by developing ontologies, applying machine learning and data sciences to convert semi-structured data to queryable knowledge graphs. You will instill hands-on performance management, inspire continuous professional development, help set realistic and high-reaching goals, ensure sound planning for their execution, and take personal responsibility for their achievement. A technical background is required in order to be a good counsel and advocate for engineering, but this role is more about enabling others than committing production facing code on a regular basis.
You have built an extraordinary software engineering organization through continuous improvement of best practices, and relish being a coach and leader, delivering consistent and thoughtful feedback.
Significant previous hands-on technical experience, ideally in areas relevant to data storage technology, infrastructure, and machine learning.
Knowledge of data sciences and machine learning pipelines utilizing Spark, TensorFlow and orchestration with Airflow is desired.
Passion for being an empathetic solutions oriented leader, with a desire for educating and successfully leading the acquisition deployment of our broad range of data assets that will produce solutions across the Fortune 500 clients that we engage with.
You have led hiring and resource planning for multiple teams, establishing hiring methodologies, interviewing metrics, & thoughtful mentorship to onboard employees successfully.
Strong communication and organizational skills are a requirement. You have partnered closely with other teams including engineering, product, commercial, data science, and other department stakeholders to align on strategy and ensure group synchronization.
You rigorously set objectives and measure results and have a passion for developing amazing employees and products.
Enigma is a rapidly growing enterprise technology company based in the Flatiron neighborhood of New York City. We are Series B funded, partnering with some of the best investors in the world: New Enterprise Associates, Two Sigma Ventures, Comcast Ventures, Crosslink Capital, American Express Ventures, and others.
Founded in 2012, Enigma was started based on the realization that there was tremendous potential in using public data to understand how the world works, but that it was untapped because the data is highly fragmented and disconnected. Enigma set out to change that by building and organizing one of the largest collections of public data in the world, and our big coming out party was winning TechCrunch Disrupts Battlefield in 2013. Our vision has remained steadfast, we want to empower people to interpret, and improve, the world around them. However, we have expanded our ability to realize this vision by combining our massive public data repository with an ecosystem of software and tools designed to link, resolve, enhance and apply data to help global-scale companies take on some of their hardest problems, ranging from preventing money laundering to ensuring patient safety.
